Comments: This laptop runs cool/one would not think it is on there is litterally no heat output except in the back where the vent is.

Cosmetically this thing looks like it is made of glass, even the keyboard is smooth and glossy. It weighs 10.8 lbs and am using it as a desktop replacement. I paid $1249+tax. I am trying to dig up xp drivers though I may need to hand pick them each by device model/brand from google oh what fun. I've already gotten a blue screen from vista so I'm going to trash it soon once I can find drivers yuck vista. Marry Christmas to myself! This thing even has a full number pad as well.

Leave your comments just curious to see what some of you hard true geeks think. I like bragging so yeah. BTW this is a Toshiba qosmio g55 q804.

Later

This isn't a Toshiba, is it?

yeah a toshiba qosmio g55 q804. These types of laptops seem to only be produced in limited quantities because as soon as the x305 q705 came out it was discontinued. actually I was lucky because this one was discontinued for some time now but best buys just happened to still have 1 left.

Vista sp1 des see 4 gb of ram, even on 32 bit. the speakers sound great. and every error you get with vista almost is listed as bluescreen, so stop panicing and actually give vista a chance. you have the spec there to really make it work.

Post 5 by rat (star trek rules!) on Wednesday, 24-Dec-2008 11:44:14

leave vista alone man, just because you get one blue screen does not mean it's going to be bad all the time. you won't find all the drivers for that puppy anymore especially if it's tosheba, take my word on that.

Post 6 by Jesse (Hmm!) on Wednesday, 24-Dec-2008 12:08:33

Agreed. Vista will be far more stable on that spec than XP, and XP won't see all your ram. When Jaws and Vista64 get everything worked out, as they will soon, go with Vista64.

I doubt he will d that. THe way it looks, I'm going with that he'll drop to XP, or go up to Seven.

He'll probably drop to xp, for a while, then switch to Windows 7, to compare the differences, once Windows 7 is rtm'd. If Windows 7 works better than XP, which is a possibility, he'll probably stick with that. From what I've heard, Jaws 64 bit may also work with Server 2k3 and 2k8 64 bit, which on a laptop is an interesting idea. Since XP 64 bit is ok but drivers are hard to find.

I will probably sart searching for drivers for xp for each individual device. and yes, I'm aware toshiba does not support xp anymore, though if I go to each manufacturer, I'm hoping they'll have drivers for what I need. I've been using vista since its release and even before that, and I must say I am not impressed at all. I think I should also break the news that windows 7, or at least build 6956 does not allow you to go back to the classic start menu which I am unhappy about. But other than that 7 runs much better and faster than vista ever did on that box. I'll keep an eye on it though. I hate vista and I gave it a year, so I've given it more than enough chances to clean its act up. sp1 just added more bloat. at least sp3 for xp fixed stuff like that WPA 2 issue that was noticed. I mean even today I had a windows installer issue where I had to go get a patch for the registry and rebooted and it was fixed. My point is that I shouldn't have to do these types of things, especially if somebody can't install a program. Ugh, a headache.

Hmm, curious choice. For myself, I woul not want a laptop that is so big and heavy, as a desktop replacement. I really like having a solid desktop, big, bulky, always runs cool, for a third of the price or less, then keep my laptop very portable, I am torn between a netbook, which is perfect for meetings and presentations, and a 13.3 or 14 incyh laptop that has a dual core processor that will run Visual Studio 2008 without too much of a hassle, either way I would never want to go with a 17 or 18 inch laptop as a desktop replacement. I'm not saying it's stupid, I can't even properly explain why I don't like this solution for myself, but I am just a bit attached to a deskop I suppose. With a wireless keyboard and pc card and head phones the box can pretty much be anywhere in your room anyway, well, if you have a Blue tooth braille display.
I definitely want one of the fancier Netbooks, Dell has a great one. As for OS I am waiting for 64 bit 7 I think, I have a legal copy of XP Pro and I have always built my desktop systems so I'll stick with them, and if I stick with a netbook I'll be ok with XP for a year or so.
cheers

Ok, I'm probably not a big geeker, but...

fm wireless antenna? That part grabbed me? Explain this further. You can get radio reception wirelessly or something?

Post 13 by b3n (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 29-Dec-2008 8:10:50

meh, the world would be a bit of a mess if you couldn't get radio wirelessly wouldn't it?
Sorry - just an observation.
I also wouldn't ever buy a desktop replacement, I really can't think of any pros.
People don't like lugging around there desktops but at the end of the day, theres no harm in having a fairly small micro atx or even mini itx system that you can take with you if for some reason you don't want a laptop.
Spec seems nice enough but it really does sound to bulky.

Post 14 by KnuxDude (Account disabled) on Monday, 29-Dec-2008 10:04:06

I chose this unit for the specs over the weight. If I really want to take it somewhere I can. Yes it has a wireless antenna with media center I can pick up any fm station. As for running cool this thing has been on for a week and it is as cool as a cu cumber. It does not get hot at all.

Hmmm.
I don't think I'd buy a desktop replacement. There's nothin like a true desktop. I can't explain why, I mean, there nice machines (at least some of em).. I don't know.
While I was on vacation in Myrtle Beach, I got a chance to look at one of those toshiba Cosmeos' at the Best Buy there the other day.
I don't really like them.
I mean, hardware wise, there great, but I don't really like the design.
It just seems too big and bulky for me
If I get a laptop, I don't need somethin that is huge and weighs 10 pounds.

Yeah my laptop is like 5 pounds, one of those ultra portable laptops. The Dell Inspiron 1525. Has some of the same specs that Toshiba has, but graphics is intel,(I don' care about graphics), um, has firewire, 4USBports, HDMI port, and a vga port or ever you say it. It has Vista home Premium Vista runs well.
